Melding pumping electronic music with gaming visuals, Weird Genius is a trio of producers from Indonesia. Reza, Gerald and Eka each have their own solo music projects, and have come together to create a supergroup. Their current tour is taking them across Indonesia, including an appearance at MTV Spotlight in Jakarta on November 3rd.

The concert also features rising hip hop sensation Ramengvrl, and will cap off a weekend of esports action at the Omen Challenger Series Grand Finals, a Counter Strike: Global Offensive esports tournament featuring teams from across Asia.

The group's hit music video, Flickshot, is a collab with vocalist Charita Utami and features top FPS games such as CS:GO, Fortnite, Apex Legends and Overwatch. (A flick is when you perfectly and quickly line up a shot for a kill, one of the best feelings in any FPS game.)

MTV Asia had a quick chat with founding member Reza during the group's current Indonesian tour.

MTV Asia: Music and gaming is an interesting combo for a career. What do you think they have in common?

Reza: All good games are based on the music they have as the soundtrack.

What did you get into first: gaming or music? And what game are you most into right now?

I got into gaming first, then music later. At the moment I'm a Fortnite pro player.

You actually played professional Dota 1 in 2003–2008. More than 10 years later, did you expect esports to become this big in Asia and the world?

Yes, I already had a vision that esports were gonna be big in the world, because gaming will never die. The gaming industry and its players are always growing every year.

If you were to go pro in CS:GO, what role would you want to play for your team?

I used to be a dedicated AWP player in CS:GO.

What was your inspiration in forming We Against The World, your esports team? What are your plans for it in the next couple of years?

I made an esports team as a pro player in Indonesia, because forming an esports team was one of my dreams. My plan is to make my team bigger, recruiting pro players from every country.

What game would you like to feature in your next music video, and why?

I don't know, since I already featured almost all FPS games in 'Flickshot' – but maybe any game that wants us to make an official track for them.

What are some of the group's music influences?

Reza: San Holo, Porter Robinson, Ta-ku, Jon Bellion and Monstercat

Eka: David Foster, Pharrell Williams, Max Martin, Zedd, Disclosure, Keys n Krates, Madeon, San Holo

Gerald: Fatboy Slim, Slipknot, Skrillex, Gesaffelstein

What's coming up next for the band?

New music, a new concept, new setlists – and we're going to play outside Indonesia, taking an Asia tour.

Don't miss MTV Spotlight performances by Weird Genius and hip hop sensation Ramengvrl on November 3rd in Jakarta. The concerts wrap up the Grand Finals of the Asia-Pacific Omen Challenger Series 2019, at Hall Cendrawasih @ Indocomtech from November 1–3. Visit for more details!
