Hyperplay 2018 Day Two: What Went Down – Grand Champions crowned, MTV Spotlight sizzles

5 August 2018

And what a way to round out the party! Day two of Hyperplay, the first-ever ASEAN esports & music festival on August 4–5, saw the Grand Finals match pitting Malaysia against Vietnam, bookended by MTV Spotlight performances by Afgan, Slot Machine, Alessia Cara and Nick Jonas. Backed by some mesmerizing visuals, the highly charged rock 'n roll of Slot Machine got the crowd worked up with soaring vocals and pounding beats.

The biggest rock band in Thailand arrived decked out in dapper black suits, delivering a set that balanced their classic Thai anthems with newer English-language tunes from their most recent album.

Next, Indonesian pop balladeer Afgan strutted on, to the delight (and screams) of the crowd. Doing his bit to quell any pre-game tension, his smooth banter and soothing vocals enchanted the audience in all corners of the venue, serenading them into the evening. If Slot Machine gave fans a reason to headbang, Afgan simply made them swoon.

In the best-of-three Hyperplay Grand Finals, Team Malaysia pulled off a major upset, defeating Team Vietnam 2–0 in a thriller that seemed to surprise almost everyone – including the Malaysian players!

After this weekend, Team Malaysia has taken home the Hyperplay trophy as the first-ever champions of Southeast Asia.

After the grandiosity of the finals, it was time for Canadian singer Alessia Cara to make her long-awaited Singapore debut.

An initial problem with the sound didn't deter her from prancing around on stage full of energy, and keeping the crowd going despite the technical hiccups. Her honest, down-to-earth pop tracks resonated with the screaming crowd, and there was obvious love for her in Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Dressed in an oversized suit and tie that plays off her latest single 'Growing Pains', she spread her message of self-confidence and acceptance that echoed across the stadium effortlessly.

Last to take the stage was Nick Jonas, the marquee main-man who strutted out to the throngs of fangirls (and fanboys) making themselves heard.

The singer and actor had the audience in the palm of his hand as he sang his hits and 'Jealous', topped off with a burst of confetti to complete the weekend with aplomb.

And that's a wrap from Hyperplay, ASEAN's first-ever esports and music festival!

If you're already missing it, don't fret — you'll be able to re-live the hottest artist moments of Hyperplay with a 60-minute special, MTV Spotlight @ Hyperplay, premiering on MTV Asia August 21 at 22:00 (SG/MY/PH), right after the 2018 Video Music Awards!
