Dave Grohl Doesn’t Let A Broken Leg Keep Him From Rocking The Heck Out: Watch

6 July 2015
The first Foo Fighters album turned 20 last week, which means everyone who bought it at their local Media Play (or who taped the singles off the radio, like me) is officially old now. Just so we’re clear.

It also means Dave Grohl and co. had to do something to comemorate the occasion. Naturally, they planned to bring their gargantuan live show to Washington, D.C. for a “20th Anniversary Blowout” show, but last month, the plan hit a snag — Grohl broke his leg at a show in Sweden.

He didn’t just break it. As he said in an open letter to fans, his fibia snapped “like an old pair of takeout chopsticks” after he fell off the stage. Ouch, man.

The band canceled its remaining European tour dates, and the likelihood of the D.C. shindig looked grim.

But where there’s a will (and a ton of tickets already sold), there’s a way! Grohl dreamed up a solution for how he could rest his leg and rock out, rigging up some sort of rock star version of the Iron Throne out of guitars and amps to keep his leg elevated. That meant the gig was back on, and last night, Grohl showed just how tough he can be — and how much he can still rock — while laid up in a full leg cast.

Seriously. Listen to the band rip into “Monkey Wrench.” It’s like nothing ever happened.

Gary Clark Jr., Heart, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, LL Cool J and others also played at the show, making it one of the most eclectic and cool Foo Fighters shows in history. Now, go rest up, Dave. The world still needs you.
