13 Times The Weeknd Made Us All Swoon From The Stage

17 February 2016
The Weeknd took home his first two Grammy awards on Monday night (February 15), but not until he’d serenaded the Staples center with ultra-smooth live renditions of “Can’t Feel My Face” and “In the Night.” Though it might have been Abęl Tesfaye’s first performance in a tux, it definitely wasn’t his first time melting hearts in an arena. The singer has been building up his stage presence since he started booking gigs at festivals and late night shows back in 2012; his Grammy performance is only the latest installment in a long history of phenomenal live singing.

Tesfaye turns 26 today, and we’re sure he’s taking the time to celebrate in style after those Grammy wins. In honor of his birthday, here are 13 live performances from The Weeknd that made us melt.

1. “Wicked Games” on Later…With Jools Holland

The Weeknd’s streak of killer TV performances started across the pond on the UK show Later…With Jools Holland. He proved his pipes with “Wicked Games” from House of Balloons way back in 2012, flexing the smooth falsetto that would go on to dominate the radio just a few years later.

2. “Losers” at Capital FM

3. “Love Me Harder” with Ariana Grande on SNL

Before he’d snag his own musical guest spot on Saturday Night Live, The Weeknd popped out to deliver his guest verse on Ariana Grande’s “Love Me Harder” in 2014.

4. “Pretty” on The Late Show with David Letterman

This Kiss Land track got new life on the Late Show in 2013—Dave was even impressed enough to make a “weekend” pun.

5. “Crew Love” with Drake in Paris

The Weeknd’s biggest co-signer brought him out for a special performance of the Take Care track in 2014.

6. “House of Balloons / Glass Table Girls” at Vevo Presents

Tesfaye brought out this older track for his Vevo Presents set last summer, and it sounds like the audience could sing along to every word as he bounced around the stage.

7. “Prisoner” with Lana Del Rey at the Forum in Inglewood, CA

On the second night of last fall’s Madness tour, The Weeknd brought out Lana Del Rey to duet on Beauty Behind the Madness track “Prisoner.”

8. “The Hills” with Nicki Minaj on SNL

For his SNL musical guest spot, The Weeknd was joined by none other than Nicki Minaj for a live remix of “The Hills.” Her guest verse pretty much makes this the official version of the chart-topping single.

9. “Earned It” at the 2015 JUNO Awards

Chandeliers and red curtains dressed up the big band number “Earned It” at last year’s JUNOs, but Tesfaye was anything but buttoned up.

10. “Can’t Feel My Face” at the Victoria’s Secret 2015 Fashion Show

How do you get a whole crew of top-tier models to dance across the catwalk in heels? You throw the Weeknd up there with them and you tell him to go for the hits. This groovy rendition of “Can’t Feel My Face” from last December’s Victoria’s Secret show saw Tesfaye livening up a whole fashion show like only he can.

11. “Drunk in Love” at Lollapalooza 2015

During his Friday evening set at last year’s Lolla, Tesfaye delivered a blistering live rendition of his moody Beyoncé remix.

12. “The Hills” at the 2015 American Music Awards

The Weeknd’s performance of “The Hills” at last year’s American Music Awards ceremony set the stage on fire—literally. (How many celebs can you spot dancing along in the crowd?)

13. “In the Night” at the 2016 Grammy Awards

Hours before he turned 26, The Weeknd took the stage at the Grammys for a slinky version of “In the Night” backed by piano and cello. He also took home two Grammys. That’s one hell of a way to celebrate your birthday.
