If Justin Bieber Can Do Reggae, Sean Paul Can Do Pop

14 September 2012
Sean Paul is ready to grow. The international dancehall star wasn't always commercially accepted, but for most of his career, SP has taken reggae way past the boarders of his native Jamaica, and with his fifth album, the "Get Busy" singer looks to take things even further. The way Sean Paul figures it is, if Justin Bieber can dip into reggae, then he should be free to go pop.

Fans will have to wait until September 18 to get a hold of Tomahawk Technique, but on it, Sean Paul promises shake-ups in traditional dancehall, thanks to collaborations with Kelly Rowland and production from Rico Love and Benny Blanco.

"What I did was ask these people to make dancehall from their perspective," Sean Paul said when he appeared on Wednesday's "RapFix Live." "I feel like the music in the genre has gotten so much bigger that it's time to expand in that form."

Paul points to the Biebs for a bit of unconventional inspiration. "Look at the biggest-Christmas-selling song last year; it was a reggae song; it was sung by Justin Bieber," he said referencing JB's reggae-tinged "Mistletoe" single. "If Justin Bieber can sing that, then I can expand my own thing."

"Got 2 Luv U," one of Tomahawk Technique's stand-out singles, features production from Stargate (Katy Perry's "Firework") and pen work from Ryan Tedder (Adele's "Turning Tables"). It's a far cry from Sean's underground work with dancehall vets like Mr. Vegas, but musically, he still holds his roots.

"The reason I call the album Tomahwak Technique is because I feel like it's the cutting edge, it's what we should sound like," he explained. "It's kind of a mixture of me holding the roots of dancehall and moving to the future."
