Hyperplay 2018 Day One: What Went Down – CL, The Sam Willows and esports collide

Day one of Hyperplay, the first-ever ASEAN esports & music festival on August 4–5, saw League Of Legends battles mixed with MTV Spotlight performances by CL and The Sam Willows.

In the first best-of-three semi-final, Team Malaysia defeated Team Philippines 2–1 in an action-packed match made even more intense by enthusiastic commentary from shoutcasters PastryTime and Kobe.

The second semi-finals match pitted powerhouse Vietnam against hometown heroes Singapore. Despite some spirited gameplay from Team Singapore and a near-victory in game 2, it was Team Vietnam that advanced to the Hyperplay Grand Finals by a score of 2–0.

Meanwhile, on the MTV Spotlight @ Hyperplay segment, Singapore favourites The Sam Willows stormed the stage with an arsenal of celebratory pop anthems that filled the stadium, especially with choice cuts off their new album I Know, But Where.

CL, the domineering hip-hop force from the land of k-pop, was as commanding and magnetic as her reputation sets her out to be. "The Baddest Female" guided fans through a minefield of booming hip-hop beats and tuneful choruses that captivated thousands of her passionate and loyal fans in the crowd.

The congregation of music fans, gamers, cosplayers and everyone in-between fueled the excitement. We were amazed to see the diversity at the intersection of esports and live music! Meet the Hoomans of Hyperplay we met throughout the day! And what esports event would be complete without cosplayers?

The stage is set for day 2 of Hyperplay, on August 5th. The Grand Finals will see Team Malaysia facing off against Team Vietnam in a battle to become inaugural Hyperplay Champions. Throughout the day, MTV Spotlight acts Slot Machine, Afgan, Alessia Cara and Nick Jonas will be belting out more music exhilaration.
