After shutting things down on Sunday with a blow-out that included a full-on set from Green Day, the "American Idiot" Broadway show is hitting the road for a North American tour.

The show, inspired by songs from the legendary East Bay punk trio, will kick off its road show on December 28 with a two-week-plus stint at the Toronto Centre for the Arts in Toronto, Ontario, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Though the casting has not yet been announced, the Broadway edition featured a long run by Green Day singer/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong as lead character St. Jimmy, as well as appearances by singer Melissa Etheridge. More dates are expected soon, but for now the tour is slated to wrap up with a June 5-10, 2012, run at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, Washington.

"American Idiot" opened on Broadway on April 20, 2010, to positive reviews and strong box office. Along the way, it snagged a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album, as well as Tony awards for Best Scenic Design of a Musical and Best Lighting Design of a Musical and a nomination for Best Musical. It also snagged a 2010 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Orchestrations and two trophies at the 2010 Broadway.com Audience Awards for Favorite Ensemble Cast and Favorite Leading Actor in a Musical for John Gallagher Jr.

The play has also been optioned by actor Tom Hanks' Playtone production house for a possible adaptation for the big screen.
