Korean psychedelic punk band rocks out to win Project Aloft Star

27 October 2017
After last week's event in Perth, the finals of Project Aloft Star, Amplified by MTV headed to South Korea on October 26. The annual singer-songwriter competition selects the top up-and-coming stars in three regions and gives their musical careers a boost with a USD$10,000 cash prize and a Believe Distribution Services deal for marketing, distribution and mentorship.

At the finals held on Thursday at Aloft Seoul Myeongdong, Ego Function Error, a psychedelic punk quartet, was declared the winner by a panel of five judges. The band shared their thoughts shortly after the announcement:

“It was a truly amazing experience where we could just be ourselves and that’s why we didn’t expect to be the final winner. But then again, if I think back, I think that’s how we could end up being the final winner, because we were just being ourselves, enjoying what we do. We couldn’t be more grateful to MTV & Aloft for giving us such an opportunity, and we’re still in shock and cannot believe this has happened to us.”

The South Korea finals saw four bands spanning a range of genres take the stage. Check out all four finalists below, and don't expect to hear any Kpop songs – there's more to Korean music than idols and pop songs!

Ego Function Error

Having formed in 2013, Ego Function Error takes psychedelia and mixes it all kinds of other influences to create a sound that’s hard to define. In 2015 the band released their first album, an intense seven-song set. With their magical chemistry creating a fun presence on stage, Ego Function Error gets the crowd on their feet.

Seoul-based artist Mutang walks the line between melodic rapping and improvisation jazz. His style consists of funky beats and gripping narratives that surprise and evoke. Mutang has reinterpreted the classic rap with unique jazzy vibes for a surprisingly modern sound. Despite being fresh in the music scene, Mutang has already made an impression with his live performances and unique music.

Smoking Goose

Smoking Goose was formed at the turn of the new decade in 2010 as a radical punk band, creating a culture for rebellion in the Korean music industry. In alignment with punk, their music was also influenced by other genres such as hard rock, ska, hardcore, and alternative rock. They create music that is robust, versatile and unique, and something that the Korean music industry totally needed!

K-indie artist UZA takes an electronic style and imbues it with acoustics, resulting in a sound that is distinctly her own. The melodic rhythms and uplifting lyrics finished with a touch of sensational string synths all work together to subtly engage and draw you in. UZA's bold and unique groove set her apart from other indie artists.

Congrats again to Ego Function Error on becoming this year’s Project Aloft Star for South Korea! The third and last finals event is for the Greater China cluster on November 3, so stay tuned to mtvasia.com to discover your next new fav artist!
