Pitbull Invites Internet Pranksters To Join Him In Alaska

18 July 2012
Mr. Worldwide, a.k.a. Pitbull, a.k.a. Armando Christian Perez, is on his way to an appearance at the Walmart in Kodiak, Alaska, thanks to more than 70,000 votes cast — or "likes" — during a Facebook contest by the store and Sheets energy strips.

What began innocently enough as a promotional campaign in which the Miami rapper agreed to visit whichever Walmart received the most "likes" on Facebook by this past Sunday became a viral sensation thanks to a Gawker report of its discovery by Something Awful's David Thorpe and Jon Hendren, who rallied thousands to join their "cause" of sending Pitbull to the most remotely located Walmart in the nation.

As a result, the "Back in Time" singer is headed up north — way up north to the town of Kodiak, population 6,256, according to the most-recent U.S. Census. Pitbull seems to have taken the viral campaign in stride and invited the so-called pranksters to join him in Alaska via a Twitter message and a taped statement embedded on Walmart's Facebook page.

"This is Mr. Worldwide. I'm over in Madrid, Spain, right now on the 'Rock in Rio' [Tour] and there's a huge Sheets energy strip/Walmart campaign going on, and I heard that Kodiak, Alaska, has the most 'likes,' due to someone who thinks he was playing a prank," Pitbull says in the video.

"I said, 'OK, this sounds great.' You have to understand that I will go anywhere in the world for my fans, so I want to thank Walmart for the opportunity, Sheets energy strips for the opportunity, and I want to invite that someone who thinks it's a joke to Kodiak, Alaska, with me. That said, enjoy a little bit of my world tour, follow me to the stage and follow me to Kodiak. Dale."
