Artbox Singapore 2018 is your weekend gateaway to food, fun, and fear

23 May 2018

There's lots to see at an Artbox, and this year's edition is certifiably bigger and better — especially since the event faced an overcrowded turnout last year.

It's not just an empty promise — with a bigger space, and with an attractive variety of attractions and stalls, it might just live up to its theme of Oasis.

Promised as an "endless variety of eateries" with "retail to great music and interactive entertainment", Artbox is a flea market, food bazaar and shopping pop-up extravaganza all in one at Bayfront Event Space. Originating from Bangkok, Artbox Singapore recreates the vibrancy of Thai night markets, but you wouldn't need a flight ticket this time.

Artbox has amassed a space three times larger than last year, so there's lots to see come May 25th to 27th, along with a second round on June 1st to 3rd.

For now, here's what you can expect from the highly-anticipated event.

Food, food and more food

The literal bread-and-butter of Artbox's appeal, and what Singapore thrives on — food culture.

There's definitely going to be a healthy amount of creative fusion items, but you can also expect some of the staples of Thai food cuisine: breaded prawn and fish cakes, grilled pork, mango sticky rice, pad thai, chicken rolls, green curry chicken, the list never ends (until you're full, anyway).

There's also the everlasting Japanese takoyaki, which is just as essential as regular street food in Singapore, along with some interesting concoctions: Easy Eggs' mentaiko eggs with grilled egg balls — which is topped by some delectable fish roe sauce — along with interesting takes on the cro-nut (ever tried it with cereal and milkshakes?)

And, of course, some delights inspired by Western cuisine. Grab n Go Hotdogs are something we're dying to try. And how can we forget Thai milk tea?

Oh, the places you'll go (to shop)

Artbox is a great time for your wardrobe (and a bad one for your bank account) but all is worth it when you take a gander at what's in store.

Face your fears

Whoever braves through the intense and excited Artbox crowds is a winner themself, but we're upping the ante this year — upping it real high.

To coincide with the airing of Fear Factor Season 2, MTV is giving viewers the chance to conquer their deepest darkest fears through a free VR Flag Challenge.

You'll be exposed to dangerous outdoor settings through VR headsets as you journey on a plank 40 floors above ground with nothing below — the ultimate goal of collecting the MTV Fear Factor flag at the edge of the plank.

Additionally, look out for the Fear Box Challenge on Saturday, June 2nd! Hosted by Hanli, four pairs of contestants will go through three rounds of the challenge to step out of their comfort zone and confront their fears.

Come down to see if they are bold enough to reach into the box of unknown creepy crawlies (or could be anything wildly gross!) as they face startling dares. 👻

Chill out on a proper summer night

Or, if you're looking for a laid-back (and anxiety-free) experience, there will be plenty of hammocks and crate seats for you to chill out and watch performances by Singaporean musicians.

And, in true Artbox tradition, there will be a kaleidoscopic foam pit, replete with inflatable pool floats.

Look your OOTD best

Aside from the vivid shipping containers that adorn the grounds of Artbox, there will be vintage cars and LED lights for you to plan your ultimate festival photo.

If fairy lights and a sun-kissed environment aren't fit for your OOTD, there's also our MTV Movie & TV Awards Red Carpet Photo Op!

For 5 hours a day, we'll teleport you right to the event's virtual red carpet with the help of our Magix Mirror! Transform yourself into a superstar worthy of the paparazzi and take your OOTD to the next level (and you'll even get to keep a printed photo to show off to your friends).

Artbox Singapore 2018 is happening at Bayfront Event Space, Marina Bay (Beside MBS) from 25 - 27 May & 1 - 3 June, 3 to 11pm — be sure to drop by and visit us!
