Thirty Seconds To Mars' 'City Of Angels' Vid: Kanye, Lindsay, More Show Love To L.A.

30 October 2013
Thirty Seconds to Mars' newest Bartholomew Cubbins video, "City Of Angels," may lack all the majestic animals featured in the VMA-winning "Up In The Air," but it does have some exotic animals of a different sort: a whole pack of celebrities. In a series of interviews about Los Angeles, director Jared Leto evokes some pretty dramatic statements from the stars.

"City of Angels" comes off Leto and Co.'s most recent record, Love Lust Faith + Dreams. Leto — er, Cubbins — is known for his epic short films-come-music-videos, but this one is a bit more restrained when it comes to special effects and visuals. Instead, it relies on interviews with stars, L.A. residents and celebrity impersonators to provide the story, intercut with sweeping images of Leto singing on California rooftops against a setting sun.

Thirty Seconds to Mars was able to enlist a pretty impressive cadre of stars to participate in the video, including Kanye West, James Franco and Lindsay Lohan — and some of them got pretty deep when discoursing about their relationships with the City of Angels.

Check out the 14 best quotes below (spoiler: more than a few come from Kanye).

1. Lindsay Lohan
"I've disappointed myself the most in my life. To not be like, 'Wake the f--- up, look what you have. This is what you've wanted.'"

2. Shaun White
"I was told from a very young age that I wasn't gonna be anything. That I wasn't gonna amount to a single thing."

3. Selena Gomez
"I'm a Disney kid. People try to tell me what to do every single day. I think they think I'm goody-goody, I'm boring. Then I'm a fame whore. I use people. So, then there's that."

4. Kanye West
"People let their frustrations out on me. I love Kanye West. They say the opposite of that. But I'm not going to say that. I'm only going to say what I'm want to put into the universe."

5. Kanye West
"People want fame and I would never tell a person to not want that, because it's f---ing awesome. Actually."

6. Ashley Olson
"Fame is an illusion."

7. Corey Feldman
"I started working when I was three years old and was basically known before I knew who my own name was. My parents needed money, so at that time it became my responsibility to pay the bills."

8. Shannon Leto
"Who knows where I would be if I didn't come to L.A. I probably would have been locked up or dead."

9. Juliette Lewis
"Dreams, they're what sets us apart from being mere a brain and a body."

10. James Franco
"Dreams and expectations also have the very dark flipside of disappointment, broken dreams."

11. Jared Leto
"My mother crawled out of the muddy banks of the Mississippi with a fistful of food stamps in one hand and two kids in the other on a mission to make a better life for herself and for her kids."

12. Corey Feldman
"I've been to the top and I've been to the bottom more times than most people ride in an elevator."

13. Kanye West
"The city of angels is my paradox: my nightmares are my dreams."

14. Kanye West
"I'm one of the few people whose middle name is motherf---ing."
