Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Festival Asian Edition Beach Weekender

By Rachelyn Gordon
Our Rating: 7/10

Expectations for this year's Beach Weekender were set at an all time high, especially after the music festival garnered the title of Best Outdoor Event in 2008. The return of the festival hit a few right notes but unfortunately missed out on a few others as well.

Having the Worldwide Festival closing ceremony at Siloso beach was a great initiative - with the impressive live music complementing the gyrating crowd who were all too eager to work up a sweat.

The lineup of musical talents was nothing short of stellar - with Gilles Peterson taking to the turntables himself, along with artistes from all around the globe such as Todd Terje from Norway, Christian Prommer from Germany, DJ Kentaro from Japan and Dubwise from Singapore.

Unfortunately, several highly anticipated acts such as DJ Inquisitive, Jackie Beats and Dubwise were only on stage after 4am, and only a handful of those who were still sober got the chance to appreciate their sets. A terrible waste of excellent ear candy, in my opinion.

The two tents that were set up at either sides of the beach had different genres of music blasting out of their huge speakers. One end of the beach started with jazz infused into its sets, aiding the crowd to settle in before pumping up the energy levels. This was also the side that saw most of the adrenaline pumping action lasting throughout the night into the wee morning hours.

The other side of Siloso held steady with its pure house, electronic and funk mash up. Several passer-bys had the opportunity to witness some really hardcore dancing and fancy footwork, but the crowd here unfortunately got worn out fast. A lucky few retreated into the comforts of Cafe Del Mar and the rest simply laid their tired bodies on the sand.

Although the scheduling of live music acts left much to be desired, the Beach Weekender was a definite hit nonetheless with all who were present. Kudos to the artists, organisers and crew for a fitting end to a weekend's worth of debauchery and fresh, pulsating beats. Raise your beer mugs and look forward to Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Festival 2010!
