The plot reads like the story of '60s girl group The Supremes and is adapted from the original Dreamgirls Broadway stage production
Three young women Deena Jones (Knowles), Effie White (Hudson), and Lorrell Robinson (Rose) desire to become pop stars and get their wish when they're picked to be backup singers for the legendary James "Thunder" Early (Murphy). Then they're set free for leads, but Curtis Taylor (Foxx) and Effie's brother C.C. (Robinson) decide for Deena to be lead, which upsets Effie.
This film version has received 8 Oscar nominations including acting, costume designing, art directing, original songs and sound mixing. Depicting the ups-and-downs of the black music scene in the '60s, the strong cast is worth the ticket admission while the numerous glittering costumes of the girls will also keep your eyes busy throughout. Soul music -- as expected -- is featured prominently in the film -- during their performances and also during the conversations to portray the emotions of the characters fully. Do watch out for stellar performance by ex-Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson where she put on 20 pounds to become Effie, the jilted lead-singer of The Dreamers and also Beyonce Knowles, who evolves from a backup singer to a full-blown lead entertainer and uncannily looks like Diana Ross with her fabulous figure and hairstyles!
