Kaiser Chiefs 'Live' in Singapore
By Rachelyn Gordon
It would be inaccurate to say the Kaiser Chiefs brought down the roof at Fort Canning, simply because the open fortress of lush greenery does not have a roof. Performing to a strong crowd made up of young indie kids to working adults in formal wear, Fort Canning could hardly contain the ecstasy the Kaiser Chiefs generated.
Opening their much anticipated concert with "Spanish Metal", the band was met with roars of approval as they followed it up with "Everyday I Love You Less and Less". Songs such as "I Predict A Riot," "Never Miss A Beat," and "Na na na na naa" had everyone (beer in hand or not) jumping like crazed lunatics to the infectious beats. By the time the Chiefs performed their smash hit and fan favourite "Ruby", crowd enthusiasm had reached a fervent level and they were forgiven for using expected (almost corny) red lights as an accompanying backdrop onstage.
A band infamous for their notoriously wild antics during gigs, the Kaiser Chiefs lived up to their reputation despite the sweltering Singapore heat that they were quite obviously not used to. Feeding off the crowd's euphoric energy, the Chiefs had the crowd bellowing and stomping their feet by demanding them to respond to their request of "who they were". In no time, "We are the Kaiser Chiefs" was echoed repeatedly by sweaty, bordering on hysterical concert goers who were no doubt, having the time of their lives. Lead singer Ricky Wilson then showed his appreciation for his Singaporean fans by climbing up the metal frame of the left hand side of the stage, sending the crowd into waves of electrifying delirium.
Energy levels were kept at an all time high till the Kaiser Chiefs ended their hour and 15 minutes long concert with "Oh My God". After dropping the last line of "Oh My God I can't believe it, I've never been this far away from home," both band and fans dispersed in a blink of an eye, leaving behind the remnants of a concert worth its long snaking queue and sweating buckets for.
The crowd's lack of enthusiasm for an encore which led to the concert's abrupt end was regrettable. But who can blame them? After all the jumping around non-stop for an hour straight, the crowd probably needed a break to recover from their jellified legs more than they needed an encore.
