Linkin Park Live In Singapore

There was an immense sense of anticipation in the air. On the arena of the Singapore Indoor Stadium, a massive veil protected the stage from view, guarding it in alluring secrecy that kept the hordes of fan on their toes. If it's anything, California's Linkin Park definitely know how to get a show going on.

Back in Singapore for the second time, LP certainly lived up to their name as one of the most extravagant acts on tour. With the veil still in place, "Wake," the atmospheric intro piece taken from their latest album Minutes To Midnight, cued the band's grand entrance. With the strategic placement of lights, the band cast gigantic shadows on the veil, making them seem much larger-than-life than they already were. And when the veil finally dropped with the opening notes from "Given Up" thus inciting the crowd to go crazy in wild abandon, it's obvious that this show would make many of the moshing kids' night.

Grandeur of visual impression aside, the band also delivered their many hits with polished accuracy that sometimes made the show almost too safe and clinical for any spontaneous sparks to happen. And there wasn't much interaction with the crowd either, except for the part where Chester Bennington stepped into the crowd, only to emerge back on stage moments later saying, "You guys are ruthless!" Apparently, the fervent crowd had taken the opportunity to grab on whatever they could of Chester, breaking his necklace and almost injuring his already broken arm.

Still, it was no damper even though Chester said he felt like punching someone in the face. That angst probably fueled his incendiary vocal prowess further. With the new material from Minutes To Midnight, Chester could sing a lot more and his voice was remarkably stirring. However, it's still his screams and Mike Shinoda's raps on the older materials that injected a much bigger boast of vitality to the show.

When a band gets bigger, there's hardly any intimacy left to bridge a closer connection with their fans. And if the fans went to the gig expecting a show of epic rock 'n' roll proportions, they've certainly got what they want. However, just like the veil, there's still this unspeakable barrier that made one feel as if you were watching all this from afar.
