They are young, they are vibrant and they are bursting with teenage kicks. Second album in and they are already a major force to behold. Just exactly what's the allure of Tennessee's Paramore?
Fronted by "the great orange hope" otherwise known as Hayley Williams, Paramore is simply a band of musicians. They may be young but their musicianship and impeccable knack for churning out a good song far belied their age. In singles like "Misery Business" and "Crushcrushcrush," there are all the signature Paramore elements -- varied musical movements, catchy melodies, mean guitar riffs that you can sing along to and bridges that climax the songs to newer heights -- that make them so uniquely unparalleled among their peers. Without a doubt, the boys -- Josh Farro (lead guitar, backing vocals), Jeremy Davis (bass) and Zac Farro (drums) - lay down a tight and solid musical frame work for Hayley to belt out those incendiary vocals of hers that set the songs ablaze. To call Riot! an aptly titled album is an understatement. This is Sparta! A musical mayhem! Kids will run amok on the streets chanting the name of their teenage goddess!
Of course, to slightly older folks, there's nothing here that they haven't already heard before and there's no denying that Paramore seems far more of a "singles" band than an "album" band with some of the lackluster, "more-of-the-same" efforts on Riot!. But to have such a gleaming gem of hope heralded as "the next big thing" is definitely very much welcomed on the scene. We all need something to get excited with. Just be careful that you don't build them up, only to tear them down much later.
