"Love, love, love, love, love, love/…Hate is a strong word but I really, really don't like you"
Such intense and conflicting emotions, all embodied in the very same Plain White T's song titled "Hate (I Really Don't Like You)." Does it not feel like as if someone took a swipe at your gut, only to reach up and rip your heart apart? Is this what emotional music is made off? Just which song out there isn't emotional at its core?
Before we digress to something that separates music lovers apart, Plain White T's is a band from Chicago that plays really catchy radio-friendly music. Despite its initial release in 2006, Every Second Counts, the band's latest album, only gained momentum in 2007 due to the inclusion of the newly arranged acoustic track, "Hey There Delilah," taken from their 2005 album All That We Needed. Ever since then, things for PWT's have simply snowballed. The band suddenly became a hit and scored two nominations at the 2008 Grammy Awards. Funny how things took a 360 turn with a good song that went under the radar the first time round.
Does that somehow suggest that PWT's might be a one-hit-wonder? Fear not. PWT's is a band that's big on hooks, be it a melody line ("Our Time Now"), a drum groove ("You and Me"), chugging guitar riffs ("So Damn Clever," "Tearin' Us Apart" and "Figure It Out") or huge sing-a-long choruses ("Friends Don't Let Friends Dial Drunk"). While the band did try to create another "Hey There Delilah" with the track "Write You A Song" and mostly write about heartrending love pains, on the whole, Every Second Counts is still quite a musically upbeat affair that would strike a chord with listeners with a taste of modern sounds.
Still, strictly speaking, Every Second Counts was released almost two years ago. Jolly time we all move on to a new album instead.
