Gone is the youth of yesteryear...
Craig David
Trust Me
(Teacup)
By Lennat Mak
Back in 2000, Craig David's press releases only hyped about one thing -- how he was the youngest British male to top the U.K. singles chart with his debut single "Fill Me In." He was 19 then, the world was his oyster and great things beckoned with his Born To Do It Album. Suddenly, 2-Step and U.K. garage (not to be mistaken with garage rock) were suddenly all the rage.
Likewise with most passing genres, the fad faded out and Craig's last two albums, Slicker Than Your Average and The Story Goes..., though mildly successful, didn't really live up to all those supposedly earth shattering great expectations. Today, Craig David is relegated to simply who he is now, a pop crooner with standard R&B fare as heard on his latest album Trust Me.
Now, that doesn't necessary mean it's a negative dig at Craig who's charted more U.K. Top 10 than most artists could wish for. Trust Me is still slick and bursting with pop sensibilities as evident on the lead single "Hot Stuff" that samples David Bowie's "Let's Dance" and the new single "6 Of 1 Thing." If you want a smooth and cool Craig, he delivers on very count with the slower tunes like "Awkward," "Just A Reminder," the breezy "Officially Yours" and he even throws in some Latin flavor with "Don't Play With Our Love." But are those the best songs that Craig came up with after a two-year hiatus from the last album? Where's that ambitious Southampton young lad who made major waves in the music scene seven years ago? Time may age a good bottle of wine, but for Craig, he just might need a little more inspiration than this.
