Songs About Girls
(Interscope Records)
By Lennat Mak
Choice Cut : ''I Got It From My Mama,'' ''One More Chance,'' ''Impatient,'' ''Make It Funky''
Theoretically, Songs About Girls is will.i.am's third solo album. However, as the Black Eyed Peas co-founder mentioned, he considers Songs About Girls to be his "first proper album," as his two previous efforts are "production compilations." So what's will.i.am's cohesive "debut" like? All about girls like the title suggests, of course.
As one of the writers for BEP's major hit "My Humps," it's no surprise that will.i.am came up with an equally cheeky song called "I Got It From Mama" that incites a whole new sing-along instead of "my lovely lady lumps." But if you thought the rest of the album is a boisterous riot throughout by just taking the cue off the lead single, you might be slightly misguided. will.i.am still keeps the tongue-in-cheek with his raps and lyrics, but the album actually moves towards a more funk/soul R&B direction instead of your usual booty-moving hip-hop. "Impatient" is a downright disco funk number while "Fantastic" sampled The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" for some retro 'fros. At times, will.i.am plays it smooth with dancier tracks like "One More Chance" and "Heartbreaker" but it's still his distinct rap style on "Spending Money" and "Make It Funky" that separates him from the pack.
There's no denying that will.i.am is a formidable producer in his realm and Songs About Girls delivers all that promise and more. But sometimes, you just miss Fergie, you know?
