Sounds Like:A great idea. U.K. music paperNew Musical Express (NME)and War Child, a charity organization that strives to bring relief and hope to children in countries ravaged by war, got together to present this compilation of classic No. 1 hits redone by some of today's most respected artists. You May Have Heard:You have probably heard most of the songs here by the original artists, such as"Come On Eileen"(Dexy's Midnight Runners),"Firestarter"(Prodigy),"Nothing Compares 2 U"(Sinead O'Connor), and"Back For Good (Take That). Now hear these chart-topping songs covered by today's hottest acts!We Fancy:Covers done differently from the originals are always interesting to listen to. Jimmy Eat World's slowed down and poignant version of Prodigy's"Firestarter"takes the song to another extreme. It's almost unrecognizable. Prodigy themselves are here with their groovy cover of The Specials' classic 1981 hit"Ghost Town."Muse's loud and hard-hitting version of The Animals'"House Of The Rising Sun"shows regard for the original while adding spice to the song.Take That's"Back For Good"is given a soulful treatment by McAlmont&Bernard Butler, ex-guitarist of Suede. Stereophonics' rendition of"Nothing Compares 2 U"retains the intensity and sparseness of Sinead's hit version of Prince's song. Oasis, not surprisingly, covers Slade (again!). This time, the Gallaghers and company spread some holiday cheer with"Merry Xmas Everybody."We're Not Sure About:Will this appeal to those who are not familiar with the originals? We certainly hope so.Verdict:Apart from the obvious novelty value of hearing classic songs given an updated treatment by today's artists -- some of whom surprise with their choice of covers -- there's a lot to like about this compilation. The 16 acts here aren't the run-of-the-mill type and their covers are thoughtful and tasteful. And they're all done for a good cause too.
