Chicken Rice War
(Yellow Music)

By Sheng Yuen
Our Rating: 8/10

In Summary : Smooth deliveries make this soundtrack a finger-licking good offering.

Riding on the strength of Tanya Chua's grungy and assured vocals, this soundtrack to Singapore's latest attempt at winning the capricious movie-going crowd,"Chicken Rice War,"has the distinct flavor of robust beer consumed with just the right amount of attitude and gumption.Tanya, already a celebrity singer in Taiwan with a couple of chart-topping songs, is one of a few true-blue talents who can write, warble, as well as wake up the dead with her powerhouse stage showmanship. Her red-hot delivery of tracks like"Some Things Should Change"and"It's Your Chance"shifts easily into an altogether different gear with the lullaby-like"I'll Remember You,"proving beyond a doubt that she is a vocal chameleon of true class.Snuggled among these Tanya nuggets are equally engaging pieces by The Stoned Revivals -- who dish up a total of six eclectic tracks that run the gamut of genres from jazz to soul, to trance and house -- and new arrivals like lovebirds Annabelle Francis and Sheikh Haikel. Especially noteworthy is the fact that almost all the performers also take up roles of composer and producer for their tracks.A totally scrumptious showcase of a select group of Singapore's best musicians!
