Being John Malkovich
(EMI)
By Evelyn Tan
Having scored films such as the Coen Brothers'"Fargo,"Todd Hayne's"Velvet Goldmine,"and Bill Condon's"Gods And Monsters,"Carter Burwell has certainly made his rounds in the indie film circuit. This time, he takes on the year's oddest comedy, Spike Jonze's"Being John Malkovich."Burwell's original score is written specifically for the piano and strings. He gives each of his lilting melodies a dark, almost menacing undertone -- creating an air of eerie dissonance throughout the album.Lending a quiet calm to the proceedings are the album's two contemporary tracks. The first is Bjork's dreamily hypnotic"Amphibian,"one of her more subdued pieces to date, accompanied by gentle piano and the tinkling of bells. The second is"Malkovich Masterpiece Remix,"which features a John Malkovich monologue against a classical-electronic backdrop. (Incidentally,"Amphibian"makes a welcome return at track 21 -- this time, in a slightly more electronic format entitled"Film Mix.")Recommended for movie buffs only.
