Fresh!
(WEA/EMI)

By Yong Shu Hoong
Our Rating: 9/10

Choice Cut : Too many to mention!

View it as a solitary stalk of spicy-red chili, or treat it as something symbolizing a pair of hot lips curling into a coy smile. Either way, the cover design hints at what's in the package -- a compilation CD containing some of the hottest alt-rock hits reaped from the pop and rock charts (and that's really something to smile about!).In all, there are, as indicated on the back cover,"16 spicy hits to freshen up your life."And indeed, your life will be freshen up with the refreshing sounds of Sugar Ray ("Every Morning"), Barenaked Ladies ("One Week"), Fastball ("The Way"), Catatonia ("Dead From The Waist Down"), and R.E.M. ("Daysleeper"). Most of the songs contained on"Fresh!"(not to be confused with the MTV show of the same name) should be familiar to MTV viewers who had caught the video clips. And we're not just talking about"MTV Alternative Nation,"as most songs -- like"Every Morning"and Blur's"Tender"-- have been played in general rotation or made it into MTV's Asia Hitlist. On the album, it's hard to make out the fine line between pop and alternative. Even if you're not really into rap or techno dance, you should have no problem appreciating FatBoy Slim's"Rockefeller Skank"and Beastie Boys'"Intergalactic"respectively. Personally, I am glad to find Collective Soul's"Run"(featured in the movie"Varsity Blues") on this compilation CD, as I had no intention of purchasing the band's latest LP. And I'm sure there are many listeners out there who are overwhelmed with gratitude that they can now get all their favorite hits on one disc. So, to the people who compiled the strong track listing, I shall quote the title of the Alanis Morissette song that kicked off the album:"Thank U."
