Anya Marina's 'New Moon' Video Premieres
By Eric Ditzian (MTV.com)
There's something special about the moment when Bella Swan and Edward Cullen stand together in the forest in New Moon, the pivotal scene when the young vampire leaves his human love because he believes that's the only way to keep her safe. It appears in the video for Death Cab for Cutie's "Meet Me on the Equinox," the lead single off the film's chart-topping soundtrack. And it's featured in the new video for "Satellite Heart," singer/songwriter Anya Marina's contribution to the movie's musical tableau.
The video, available on MySpace, is set in a location very similar to Forks, Washington, the town where Kristen Stewart's Bella and Robert Pattinson's Edward meet and fall in love. Wearing a black, hooded cloak, Marina walks somberly through a lush forest, past waterfalls, rushing water, moss-covered boulders and thick foliage. Her blood red nails and lips contrast with her pale skin and the earthy green and brown tones of her surroundings. The song has a simple, stripped down arrangement led by an acoustic guitar and eventually joined by strings.
As we see Bella stand alone in the forest, it seems Marina is invoking the perspective of the heartbroken teen. "So pretty, so smart," she sings. "Such a waste of a young heart/ What a pity, what a sham/ What's the matter with you, man?"
"Satellite Heart" isn't Marina's first brush with the big screen. Years ago she appeared in the Katherine Heigl-starring teen comedy, 100 Girls. Her music has also popped up on the small screen in shows like The Real World, Gossip Girl, Grey's Anatomy and How I Met Your Mother.
As the video for "Satellite Heart" winds down, the allusions to Edward and Bella's complicated relationship become even more evident. As the vampire kisses her goodbye and turns to leave, Marina sings that she's "lost in the dark." As Bella wanders solitarily through the forest, unable to let go, Marina declares, "But I'll be true to you no matter what you do/ Yeah, I'll be true to you."
