Catch Ronin, Electrico And West Grand Boulevard At The Cancer Warriors Concert
By Gabriel Leong
Most people would have grieved helplessly after losing a loved one to cancer. When magazine editor Stella Thng lost a sister, Sally Thng, to colorectal cancer, she was so inspired by her sister's indomitable spirit that she bravely embarked on an arduous journey to compile a book documenting the experiences and courage of other cancer patients.
The Cancer Warriors features 23 stories of ordinary people with extraordinary tales of their cancer combat. Besides heart-baring interviews with patients like veteran comedy actress Koh Chieng Mun, the late Joan Chan Shu Fang, and the five-year-old Filmer Tan, the book also includes interviews with celebrities who have lost close family and friends to cancer, such as Taiwanese singer and Superband host Milk, and the Singapore Idol Top 12 finalists.
In conjunction with the book, The Cancer Warriors Project -- a first-of-its-kind charity drive -- has been launched. Together with the book, there will also be a charity flea market, and the release of the Cancer Warriors CD, featuring performances from some of the biggest names in local music like Sun Ho, Ronin, Electrico and West Grand Boulevard.
MediaCorp artiste Fiona Xie also makes her singing debut in the CD, on "Love Will Shine On Through," a duet with Ronin's Levan Wee. Expressing her support for the project, Fiona says, ""I was very touched by Stella's project and as a friend, singing on the album is the only thing I can do to help. I hope we'll be able to raise lots of funds and make a difference in the lives of cancer patients, so go out and buy the book and CD!"
The book ($12.90) and CD ($14.90) are both out now at Capitaland Shopping malls' customer service counters. The CD is also available at Sembawang Music Centres, and the book at 7-Eleven outlets island-wide.
The book and CD will be launched officially with a Cancer Warriors concert at *scape Youth Park, September 09, 2006. Hosted by Daniel Ong, the concert will feature Ronin, Electrico, West Grand Boulevard as well as special appearances from the Singapore Idol Top 3 finalists.
Bargain hunters can also choose to check out the Cancer Warriors-themed charity flea market organised on the same day. Motorola, Ed Hardy, Crocs, 77th Street, Sony-BMG and UIP have all kindly contributed items to be sold at 30 to 60% off. So drop by and shop in the name of charity! The Cancer Warriors book and CD can also be purchased together for a special prize of $25 this Saturday.
The Cancer Warriors Project aims to raise awareness, support and funds for cancer patients in Singapore. Proceeds from The Cancer Warriors Project will go to Breast Cancer Foundation, Joan Chan Trust Fund, Methodist Hospice Fellowship and Terry Fox Run Foundation
