Sandwich Bags Four Awards At MTV Pilipinas
By News Desk
All kinds of heart-stopping action and surprises unraveled at The MTV Pilipinas Video Music Awards 2006. On the evening of August 14, 2006, audiences at the PAGCOR Grand Theater in Casino Filipino (NAIA) witnessed MTV's most star-studded music video awards show to date. The action-packed event was hosted and co-produced by MTV VJ KC Montero, and directed by Kokoy Jimenez.
Australian pop-rock legends INXS led the cast of stellar attendees, together with their charismatic new front man JD Fortune. INXS presented the Favorite Rock Award, and were also honored with the MTV Inspiration Award, for being a steadfast source of inspiration for almost 3 decades of making music. Fortune's Rockstar mate Fil-Australian MiG Ayesa was also there to walk the red carpet and present the Video of the Year Award to Sandwich, whose monster hit video "Sugod" also took home awards for Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Director for Marie Jamora.
Other special guests at the event included some of local showbiz' top names such as Kristine Hermosa, Deither Ocampo, Dingdong Dantes, Marvin Agustin, Jolina Magdangal, Iza Calzado, Yasmein Kurdi, Geneva Cruz, Troy Montero, Aubrey Miles, Cogie Domingo, Rica Peralejo, Angelica Panganiban, Aiza Marquez and Zanjoe Marudo. Nominees who were also present at the event included Ogie Alcasid, Barbie Almalbis, Sugarfree, Spongecola, Dice and K9, Drip, and Dream Kitchen.
On its 6th year of honoring the best and the brightest of musicians and music video makers in the industry, The MTV Pilipinas Video Music Awards 2006 proved once again to be the biggest music video awards show of the year. The event was celebrated around the theme of the "MTV Family" - comprised of musicians, music video makers and music lovers from all over the country. The theme was depicted in typical Pinoy family telenovela style, complete with all the necessary ingredients: action, drama, comedy, suspense, and a whole lot of loving.
The show was packed with electrifying performances by Parokya Ni Edgar and Kamikazee, who opened the show with a medley of their biggest hits of the past year: Parokya Ni Edgar's "Papa Cologne," followed by Kamikazee's "Narda," and concluded with the two bands' hit collaboration "Ordertaker." Indie favorites Up dharma Down gave a stunning performance of their songs "Maybe" and "Pag-Agos."
Maestro Ryan Cayabyab and the timeless diva Pilita Corrales surprised their co-Philippine Idol judge Francis M by presenting him with the MTV Generations Award, given to artists who have influenced different generations of musicians and music lovers throughout their career. Dicta License then followed the award with a fitting tribute performance to Francis M, infusing their rendition of his big hits with their own rocking musical flavor. Francis M then joined the band and jammed with them on some of his most popular songs, such as "Three Stars and a Sun," "Ito Ang Gusto Ko," "Kaleidoscope World" and "Mga Kababayan Ko."
R&B prince Jay-R did the very first live performance of his new single "Keep Ya Head Up" with rappers Mike Swift and Jimmy Muna. Cebu-based rock sensations Urbandub thrilled audiences with their latest single "Endless, A Silent Whisper," followed by their anthemic hit "First of Summer." Pop-rock wonders Imago were refreshingly upbeat with their performance of their latest release, "Taralets." And the wacky boys of Itchyworms brought the house down with their hits "Akin Ka Na Lang" and "Beer."
After receiving their award for Video of the Year, Sandwich fittingly concluded the show with an inspired performance of their winning single "Sugod," along with "Walang Kadala-dala." MTV VJ KC then closed another successful year of The MTV Pilipinas Video Music Awards.
A total of 18 awards were given out to artists in different categories:
