MTV Pilipinas 2005 Awards: A Knockout!
By News Desk
It was a night filled with action, excitement, and loads of fun as MTV Philippines revealed the winners of the MTV Pilipinas 2005 Video Music Awards. The best in Pinoy music video making were honored in the biggest and coolest awards show of the year, which was held last August 25 at the Araneta Coliseum.
With MTV Pilipinas on its fifth year, thousands of music fans got to watch the awards show live at the Big Dome, which was transformed to match this year's grand boxing theme.
MTV, the world's largest television network and the country's favorite music channel, put on a dazzling show packed with lots of flair, under the helm of director Kokoy Jimenez and musical director Mel Villena. The annual awards show, which was exclusively presented this year by Smart Buddy, was kicked off by cult TV fave Jojo Alejar, as he introduced the opening performance of Radioactive Sago Project and Junior Kilat, who performed the Rocky theme song together before launching into their hits, "Astro" and "Ako si M16," respectively.
In grand MTV style, Epy Quizon, Karylle, and MTV VJ KC Montero gamely took on the duties of hosts, providing nonstop entertainment together with celebrity guests and presenters MTV VJs Cindy Kurleto, Mariel Rodriguez, Colby Miller, Maike Evers, Claire Olivar, John Joe Joseph, Nicole Fonacier, and Don Puno; Rex Navarrete, Parokya ni Edgar, Richard Gutierrez, Francis Magalona, Michael V., Bianca Gonzalez, Borgy Manotoc, Phoemela Baranda, Ryan Agoncillo, Francine Prieto, Juliana Palermo, Georgina Wilson, Onyok Velasco, Peque Gallaga, the Philippine Boxing Team, and The Late Isabel.
In true MTV style, the awards show was filled with rare production numbers. Popular solo acts, Nina, Christian Bautista, Rachelle Ann Go, and Erik Santos shone in the spotlight when they sang a unique medley of each other's hits, "Pagbigyan Muli," "Hands To Heaven," "Love Of My Life," and "I Don't Want To Be Your Friend."
Pop rock sensations Hale and Cueshe also shared the stage to perform their hits, "The Day You Said Goodnight," and "Stay," respectively, before launching into a performance of After Image's "Next In Line."
Kitchie Nadal, who took home the MTV Ayos! special award for Chart Attack Song of the Year, had a grand performance of her anthem "Huwag Na Huwag Mong Sasabihin," together with the multi-awarded University of the Asia and the Pacific Chorale.
One of the highlights of the night was the tribute to Gary Valenciano. MTV Philippines chose to present him with the first MTV Generations Award, in recognition of his career that has spanned decades and broken boundaries, and for his music which continues to inspire generations of artists and music fans both here and abroad. The tribute was introduced with a medley of some Gary V's greatest hits, "Eto Na Naman," "Di Bale Nalang," and "Huwag Mo Na Sanang Isipin," as performed by heavyweights Sugarfree, Rivermaya, and Hannah of Session Road. After receiving his award, Gary Valenciano, launched into a heartstopping performance of "Hataw Na," together with his son, Gabriel Valenciano, and Powerplay.
In a powerful finale, MTV assembled an all-star band featuring some of the biggest names in Pinoy rock: Ely Buendia of Pupil, Karl Roy of Kapatid, Marc Abaya of Kjwan, Francis Reyes of The Dawn, Niņo Avenido of Greyhoundz, Mike Elgar of Rivermaya, and Wendell Garcia of Barbie's Cradle, to perform Pinoy rock classics "Pagbabalik ng Kwago," "Tao," and "Himig Natin." Living rock legend Pepe Smith also joined the finale as a surprise guest.
