Staind Score Third Straight Billboard Win With Chapter V
By Chris Harris (MTV.com)
It had been awhile -- two years, in fact -- since Staind released 14 Shades of Grey, so the fate of the New England band's latest album, Chapter V, was uncertain. Fortunately for Staind, the LP's leadoff single, "Right Here," helped move nearly 185,000 copies of the album, giving the rockers their third consecutive Billboard-topping debut, according to the latest SoundScan figures.
While Chapter V marks a victory for the band, it isn't Staind's biggest first-week performer. 2003's 14 Shades opened with close to 221,000 scans, while the band's 2001 breakthrough, Break the Cycle, scored sales of more than 716,000 during its first week in stores. This time out Staind were closely followed by the 19th installment in the Now That's What I Call Music! series, which sold more than 160,000 copies during its fourth week in stores, capturing the albums chart's No. 2 and pushing the compilation -- which includes hit songs by Eminem, Gwen Stefani, Ludacris and Coldplay -- to just over 1 million sold.
