1968: Jackson 5 signs a contract with Motown Records

1969 – 1976: The Jackson 5 become a popular household name with chart-topping No. 1 singles like "I Want You Back", "ABC", "The Love You Save" and "I'll Be There", making them the first group in pop history to have their first 4 singles top the charts. They eventually released a Greatest Hits collection, changed their name to The Jacksons and even had their own TV show

1979: MJ's solo album Off the Wall, produced by Quincy Jones, makes him a superstar, with over 19m copies sold worldwide

1980: Wins Grammy for best male R&B vocal performance with "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough"

1982: Release of the iconic Thriller album, which sells over 50m copies worldwide, and cements his status as the reigning ‘80s King of Pop. The album then goes on to become the best-selling album of all time

1983: Performs "Billy Jean" at the Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever Special and does the moonwalk for the first time, later to become his signature move

1984: Gets his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

1985: Co-writes charity single "We Are The World" with Lionel Richie

1987: Releases the album Bad which sells over eight million copies

1988: Releases autobiography Moonwalk. Moves into 2,700-acre Neverland Valley Ranch in California's Santa Ynez Valley

1990: Thriller is certified 21 times platinum, making it the biggest-selling album of all time

1991: Releases the album Dangerous

1992: Enters the Guinness Book of World Records as the highest-paid entertainer in the music industry, his 15-year contract with Sony is worth an estimated 41 billion. Founded "Heal the World Foundation", an organization that will help improve the lives of children everywhere.

1993: Honored with the Grammy Legend Award

1994 – 1996: Brief marriage to Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis Presley

1995: Releases the album HIStory:Past, Present, Future Book 1
